Rev. Paul Epton
Author of that memorable novel "Love in Action."
As books go, Pastor Paul Epton's
'Love in Action' won't be remembered as a timeless classic. Some may remember it as a fabricated self indulgent
literary catastrophe, but in the style of Pastor Paul himself I'd rebuke those 'bafoons' and tell them to read
it again.
It tells the moving tale about how Revd Paul Epton got dizzy one day and thought he saw an angel that for some
unknown reason told him to go to Birkenhead of all places? Later on Pastor Paul Epton recounts how God gave
him a vision of a 5000 seater Church that was to be built on 20 acres of green belt land beside the M53 motorway.
In fact Paul Epton extended the vision to include not just a bloody great big Church, but also a complex of
buildings including sports facilities, a school, offices, living spaces and a car park to round it all off.
Sadly though, it would seem that God, in association with Pastor Paul Epton, changed his mind and felt that
the people of the Wirral were simply too heathen to deserve a 5000 seater church. A move that was probably a
good idea because going by average WCC Sunday service turnouts, that would mean that each attendee to this
vast home of the good Lord would have around 20 seats each.
The book is full of Pastor Paul's little gems like when he tells the tale of how he proudly intimidated a
senior council official by fixing him with a good long stare. Or when he describes Terry Dyson, a member of
his Church, as some kind of sex pest calling him an inveterate womanizer who pestered women constantly.
One of my favorite displays of Pastor Paul's wonderful work is when he cuts off a member of his Church who
is trying to bring a concern she has about his leadership to him. In the book he tells of how he interrupts
her, cutting her off, and then proceeds to tell her that God has a word for her that goes along the lines of
'leave the church, leave the area, and don't ever come back.'
Of course anyone who has read the book will also remember the classic moments like when Pastor Paul caught a
man in a raincoat "standing erect in the middle of the congregation." Or when he threw out his "delicately
handsome" Church treasurer, Charles Eliot, because he had a feeling that Eliot might possibly be gay.
In my opinion this book is a 'must read' for anyone who has ever known
Paul Epton, the man himself.

No doubt a new book would include Pastor Paul's version of what happened to people like Barry Carlson,
Vicky Taylor, Pastor Kenny, Mike Halliday, Nigel Holmes, Will Woodhouse and the many others who were either
shown the door or left his dominion under a cloud of rumour and gossip.
